Eagle Women Lose GLIAC South Opener At Walsh

Box Score

CANTON, Ohio – Ashland University's women's basketball team lost Thursday (Jan. 15) night at Walsh, 64-50, in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference South Division opener for both teams.

The Eagles now are 9-6 overall and 5-4 in the GLIAC after their second loss in a row, while the Cavaliers pull even with Ashland for second place in the South at 11-4, 5-4, with their second straight victory.

Freshman forward Laina Snyder had a big night in defeat, pacing the Eagles with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Senior guard Taylor Woods added 10 points, while freshman forward Andi Daugherty had eight points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.

Ashland kept the Cavaliers to 35.4-percent shooting from the field, outrebounded Walsh, 46-38, and had a season-high-tying seven blocks.

"It's at the other end of the court," said Ramsey, referring to Ashland's 50 points, 33.9-percent shooting from the field and 24 turnovers. "It will come.

"I think we had a little bit of a lag from the Michigan Tech game, with our youth and all. We need to learn how to put things behind (us). I thought Walsh had a very good game plan. Those were good shots within our offense. We just need to able to finish."

Thursday night's game featured two of the seven highest-scoring teams in the GLIAC (Walsh first at 77.4 points per game, Ashland tied for sixth at 71.7), but the contest began slowly on the scoreboard. The Eagles took a 10-9 lead with 13:10 to go until halftime, and at the second media timeout at the 8:48 mark, it was 13-11 in favor of Walsh.

Ashland scored the first four points out of that media timeout to retake the lead at 15-13, but after Walsh retied the game at 15, Woods hit a top-of-the-circle 3-pointer to put the Eagles back ahead at 18-15. Ashland extended its lead to 22-17, and took a 22-20 lead into halftime thanks to a defense which kept the Cavaliers to 29-percent shooting from the field and forced 10 turnovers.

The first half belonged to Snyder, who had her 10th double-digit scoring game, her fifth double-digit rebounding game and her fifth double-double of her freshman season in the game's first 20 minutes.

"I thought she played with a tenacity and ownership of rebounds and the paint area," Ramsey said.

Walsh scored the first nine points of the second half to retake the lead at 29-22, but a Snyder layup at the 15:21 mark snapped a nine-plus-minute scoreless drought.

The Cavaliers had a 48-34 lead with 7:40 left in the second half before the Eagles put together a 9-2 spurt to get to within seven points at 50-43. But Walsh scored seven straight points to go on top 57-43 at the final media timeout with three minutes to play.

The Eagles will return home Saturday (Jan. 17) at 1 p.m. to begin a three-game homestand against Malone.

NOTES: In her 100th career game, Woods moved into 12th place on Ashland's all-time scoring list, passing Gail Wasmus (1,200) now with 1,206 career points, two behind Darla Plice (1,208) for 11th place…Snyder's rebound total now gives the Eagles 17 consecutive games with a freshman board leader or co-leader…Ashland now has given up 30 or fewer points in a half 17 times this season.
