AU Women Shut Down Walsh, 66-53

Box Score

The Ashland University women's basketball team raised its record to 3-0 Tuesday (Nov. 23) at Walsh, beating the Cavaliers, 66-53.  The victory gives the Eagles a 3-0 record. This was Ashland's last game before a short break for Thanksgiving.

Walsh (4-2) is ranked 14th in the national NAIA poll.  The Cavaliers outrebounded the Eagles, 44-29, but struggled to find any consistent offense against AU.  Walsh shot 31.1 percent from the floor (19-for-61) and 18.2 percent (2-for-11) from three-point range.  This is the fewest points allowed by the Eagles since they yielded 53 points at Tiffin on Dec. 12, 2009.

The Eagles were in front, 26-22 at halftime.  AU took control of the game in the first four and half minutes of the second half, outscoring the Cavaliers, 15-6 during that stretch.

Senior guard Rachel Poorman (Zanesville, Ohio/Maysville) led all players in the game with 18 points.  She also had three assists and two steals.  Junior guard Jena Stutzman (Berlin, Ohio/Kent State) had 14 points and a team-high six rebounds.  Senior forward Liz Tyler (Monroeville, Ohio) finished with 12 points and four rebounds.

Walsh received 11 points and five boards from Katie Berry and 10 points and six rebounds from Cara Bedard.  Bianca Hooten led all players in the game with seven rebounds.

Ashland's next game is Saturday (Nov. 27) in the first round of the Holiday Inn Express Classic. The Eagles will host Urbana that day at 3 p.m.
