Men’s Soccer Tops Cavaliers For Second Time In 2026, 3-0

For the second time in a week, the Ashland University men's soccer team played Walsh.

And for the second time in a week, the Eagle men beat the Cavaliers, as, on Thursday (Sept. 24) night at Ferguson Field, AU took a 3-0 decision to improve to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

On Sept. 17, Ashland beat Walsh in North Canton, Ohio, by a 4-0 count.

In the fifth minute, sophomore forward Tom Woodward collected his own shot that was saved by the Cavaliers (1-6-1, 0-4-1), and deposited the second shot in the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.

Then, in the 41st minute, freshman forward Owen Beskid's first collegiate goal put the Eagles up 2-0. Assists went to Woodward (fourth of the season) and senior midfielder Sergio Ruiz (first of 2026).

Woodward and Beskid teamed up for AU's third goal of the night, coming in the 51st minute, as Woodward's fifth goal of the campaign – all against Walsh – was set up right to left by Beskid (second assist of the season).

The brace is Woodward's third as an Eagle, and it is his fourth two-plus-goal collegiate game.

"Woody, strikers are going to be a bit streaky at times," said Ashland head coach Nick Roberts. "He's (Beskid) as quick as anything. He gives us a lot. He's got pace, pace galore out there. He's going to cause problems."

Said Beskid, "We started off really fast, and I thought it was a great way to start getting some wins here. I just like to give energy and give my team an extra boost."

Earning his third clean sheet of the season was junior goalkeeper Jaime Duran, who made a season-high 10 saves on Thursday night.

"He's very steady. He's an experienced goalkeeper," Roberts said. "He's up to speed. Anytime you've got a goalkeeper in the nets like that, it gives confidence to the team."

Ashland out-shot Walsh, 21-17, and each team took four corner kicks.

The Eagles are 5-1-2 against the Cavaliers since the start of the 2023 season.

Ashland will stay at home for another league contest against Cedarville (3-5-1, 3-2) at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 26).
