On Saturday (Sept. 19) afternoon in Michigan, the Ashland University volleyball team went 1-1 in a split day – topping Hillsdale in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference contest, then losing to No. RV Gannon in a non-conference affair.
 
The 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-15) victory over the Chargers keeps the Eagles undefeated in league play at 5-0, and was their seventh consecutive win. The 3-1 (25-27, 27-25, 25-19, 25-16) loss to the Golden Knights snapped that streak, leaving AU at 10-2 overall.
 
Against Hillsdale, there were many key contributors to the win.
 
Both sophomore outside hitter Jenna Shedden (16 kills, 13 digs) and senior setter Kylee Urban (27 assists, 11 digs) finished with double-doubles, and both junior middle blocker Myia Etzler (10 kills, nine total blocks) and senior setter Marin Dixon (22 assists, nine digs) nearly joined them.
 
Senior libero Abbey Queen racked up 32 digs, while junior outside hitter Sara Krizsa ended with 11 kills.
 
That match featured 19 tie scores and 10 lead changes.
 
The match vs. Gannon saw 35 tie scores and 17 lead changes, and saw Shedden (12 kills, 18 digs) and Urban (22 assists, 15 digs) each record their second double-double of the day.
 
Sophomore right-side hitter Kelsey Lykins had 10 kills, Dixon had 14 assists, Etzler blocked seven more shots (six assisted), and Queen (23) and sophomore defensive specialist Sydney Weickert (10) all also had double-digit digs.
 
Ashland will return to Great Midwest play on Friday (Sept. 25) at 6 p.m. at Lake Erie.
