First place feels oh so nice.
On Saturday, May 2, the Ashland University baseball team was able to take back-to-back home wins over the Hillsdale College Chargers to secure the No. 1 spot in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference North Division.
The wins didn't come without a bit of excitement, though, as both finished in walk-off fashion.
Locked in a 4-4 tie entering the bottom of the seventh inning of play, Ashland found a way to deliver when it mattered most.
After an out started the inning, putting Ashland on thin ice, Collin Overholt worked a walk and aggressively moved into scoring position with a stolen base. That set the stage for Ryan Shimek, who has stepped up for the Eagles multiple times this season, driving a ball into right-center field for a walk-off RBI double, 5-4.
He finished the game with two hits and three RBIs, including the game-winner. Franks added a triple and two RBIs, while Drew Stevens chipped in with a hit and an RBI. On the mound, Ashland used a three-pitcher effort, with Chase Carter earning the win after tossing a scoreless seventh inning to keep the game in hand.
Heading into game two with momentum and confidence through the roof, knowing all they needed was one more positive result to take sole control of first in the North Division, the Eagles repeated game-one efforts.
After trailing 6-3 in the sixth inning, the Eagles fought back when Kaiden Mastri crushed a two-run home run to right field, cutting the deficit to 6-5 and setting up the late-game finish.
In the bottom of the seventh, Drew Stevens led off with a single and Nate King followed with a walk to put the winning run on base. With one out, yet again, Weaver stepped up and delivered, ripping a double down the left field line that scored both runners and gave Ashland the walk-off 7-6 victory.
The Eagles improved to 35-14 overall on the season and 23-8 in conference play.
With momentum surging, Ashland is preparing for the Great Midwest Athletic Conference championships, which will begin on Wednesday, May 6, from Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio.
The Eagles are waiting to see which team they will end up going against.Â
