It's an every-other-year thing for Ashland University's baseball team – winning the opening game of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament.
On Wednesday (May 6) night at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio, the No. RV Eagles used a strong outing from undefeated junior right-handed pitcher
Jackson Grine and some early crooked numbers on the scoreboard to top Ohio Dominican, 6-2, to open the 2026 league tourney.
The tournament's top seed, Ashland improves to 36-14 overall thanks to an eighth consecutive win. The Eagles also won the Great Midwest Tournament opener in 2022 and 2024.
Ashland jumped on top in the bottom of the second inning, scoring four times. Sophomore second baseman
Colton Hunt's two-run double got things going, graduate shortstop
Collin Overholt added an RBI single, and the fourth run came in following a Panther throwing error (RBI credited to senior third baseman
Ryan Shimek).
ODU (19-28) scored once in the top of the third on a two-out error, but the Eagles got the run back in the bottom of the frame when senior left fielder
Billy Howard lifted a sacrifice fly. Later in the bottom of the third, sophomore right fielder
Sean Krueckeberg singled, stole second, went to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch.
The Panthers scored a run in the top of the eighth, but could get no closer – as Grine improved to 6-0 after his longest outing as an Eagle. He went 7 2/3 innings, scattering nine hits, allowing two runs (one earned), striking out three and walking three.
Sophomore righty
Ben Zink retired all four batters he faced for his fourth save of 2026.
All of AU's 11 hits came from five players – Overholt (3-for-4, RBI, stolen base), graduate center fielder
Chris Franks (2-for-4, stolen base), Krueckeberg (2-for-4, two runs scored, stolen base), Howard (2-for-3, run scored, RBI) and Hunt (2-for-4, two RBIs, run scored).
Ashland is 3-0 this spring vs. ODU, having also won twice in a pair of non-conference mid-season contests.
The Eagles will continue Pool B play in the winners' bracket on Thursday (May 7) at 1:30 p.m. vs. Kentucky Wesleyan (27-22).
