Swimming and Diving Cade Cracas, Athletic Communications Graduate Assistant

Eagle Men, Women Rout Bluffton, ONU On The Road

The Ashland University women's and men's swimming and diving teams dominated a late-season tri-meet against Ohio Northern and Bluffton, turning in yet another strong late-season performance.

On Friday (Jan. 23), the Eagles made the trip to Ada, Ohio, squaring off against the Polar Bears and Beavers, with both the men's and women's teams coming out on top. The Eagle women finished first with 160 points, while the men totaled 165 to help secure the team sweep with a total of 325.

Diving for the team on Friday night were senior Joey Lenczyk, junior Riley Hunt, junior Maddie Whitticar and junior Macey Wade in the 1-meter events. Lenczyk recorded a mark of 291.60, and qualified for NCAA Division II nationals, while Hunt notched 256.55. Whitticar and Wade also were able to qualify for nationals, finishing with scores of 241.75 and 232.10, respectively.

Individual event winners for the AU women were sophomore Yasmim Tomita in the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.29), 100-yard backstroke (1:03.30), and 100-yard individual medley (1:06.45); junior Payton O'Toole in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:35.77), 100-yard butterfly (1:03.42), and 500-yard freestyle (5:43.48); senior Colleen Cox in the 50-yard breaststroke (32.21), 100-yard freestyle (57.41), and 100-yard breaststroke (1:13.21); Wade in the 50-yard freestyle (28.71); and Whitticar in the 50-yard backstroke (37.30).

Individual event winners for the Eagles men were senior Robin Falk in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.67), 100-yard butterfly (52.31), and 500-yard freestyle (4:48.30); sophomore William Collins in the 50-yard backstroke (25.96) and 50-yard freestyle (23.01); senior Andrew Oates in the 50-yard breaststroke (29.29) and 100-yard individual medley (58.88); senior Jack Elliott in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.82) and 50-yard butterfly (25.14); junior Grant Brown in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.13) and 100-yard freestyle (52.20); and sophomore Grant Wallery in the 1000-yard freestyle (12:23.35).

Ashland also swept the relays, winning all four races.

Following the strong showing, the Eagles will prepare for their final few meets of the regular season, set for Saturday (Jan. 24) against Ohio Northern and Friday (Jan. 30) against Clarion.
