Eagle Men, Women Sweep Great Midwest Outdoor Team Titles

Ashland Earns Two Team Championships At Same Conference Meet For First Time Since 1999

On Friday (May 2) afternoon, the Ashland University outdoor track and field teams accomplished something they hadn't done in more than a quarter century.

At the conclusion of the 2025 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Championship, the No. 18-ranked Eagle women and the No. 20 AU men each had won team conference titles – for the first time since being a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1999.

"It's absolutely unbelievable," said Ashland head coach A.G. Kruger. "We've been so close, especially on the men's side. It feels so good to see all these kids come together and put it all together on a weekend."

In the women's standings, Ashland finished with 209 points, Findlay was second (168) and Hillsdale was third (135). On the men's side, the Eagles ended with 194 team points, with Tiffin second (164) and the Oilers third (152).

Ashland's plethora of conference titles on Friday started with:
  • Fifth-year Aniya Seward in the women's 100 hurdles (improved nationals provisional time, 13.36 seconds) and women's triple jump (new provo, 12.38 meters/40-feet-7½).
  • The men's 4x100-meter relay of senior Joe Wahl, senior Caden Morris, sophomore Liam Mann and junior Derrick Amapps (new provo of 40.41 seconds).
  • Junior Abby Wheeler in the women's high jump (1.67 meters/5-feet-5Âľ).
  • Junior Garrett Baker in the men's pole vault (5.30 meters/17-feet-4½).
  • Senior D.J. Duncan in the men's 110 hurdles (14.01 seconds).
  • The men's 4x400 relay of senior Colin Hunkele, Amapps, sophomore Colton Thress and senior Noah Wood (3:11.56).
Junior Nate Slater won a league title in the men's 1,500 run, finishing in an improved provo time of 3:46.63 – and in a comfortable 3.23 seconds over the second-place finisher.

"It felt really good. I knew once we started the race that it was just going to have to be all-out from the start," Slater said. "I kind of started with the lead, and I didn't want to leave it to chance at the end. I just wanted to bet on myself.

"It's not even just the distance program this weekend. Sprints have been wonderful, throws really stepped up. Our jumpers have been great. It's been all-around inspiring to watch. You're not just doing it for yourself, you are doing it for the team."

In the women's 800 run, junior Jade Avance won with an improved provo time of 2:05.73 – 2.57 seconds ahead of the next competitor.

"All glory to God," Avance said. "Just trying to go out there and execute what we do every single day. It was so much fun. Just trying to represent AU well."

Senior Lily Dowdell had a big Friday, winning the women's 5,000 run in 17:12.19, and setting a new school record with a new provo time of 4:24.55 in the women's 1,500 run.
