Softball Splits In Florida For Third Game Day In A Row

Ashland University's softball team returned to action in Florida on Thursday (March 6), and split two games with Minnesota-based teams – a 9-3 win over Concordia-St. Paul and a 4-3 loss to Bemidji State.

After St. Paul scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to open AU's first game of the day, the Eagles (8-6) came back in the next half-inning with a four-spot. Sophomore catcher Delaney Keith launched a solo home run to cut the early deficit in half, junior center fielder Ashley Veldheer's RBI single tied the game at 2, then sophomore third baseman Sophia Martin's run-scoring single and Veldheer scoring on an error on the same play put Ashland on top, 4-2.

The Bears put a run up in the bottom of the second, but AU came back with its own run in the top of the third on an RBI triple from sophomore left fielder Delaney Maynard. Martin made the Eagle advantage 6-3 in the fourth on an RBI triple.

Junior pitcher Delaney Lis then helped herself with an RBI single in the fifth and an RBI triple in the seventh, and sophomore right fielder Maren Metikosh rounded out the scoring with an RBI safety in the final frame.

In the loss to Bemidji State, each team scored twice in the first inning – Ashland plating two on a bases-loaded walk drawn by senior first baseman Lily Rockwell and junior second baseman Danielle Robbins scoring on a wild pitch.

The Beavers scored single runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to go up 4-2, then Ashland's rally fell short in the bottom of the seventh despite a Keith sacrifice fly.

LIS A TWO-WAY THREAT…AND THE REST OF THE STORY
  • Lis (5-1) twirled a complete-game six-hitter, allowing three runs (two earned) and a walk and striking out five against CSP.
  • Martin, Rockwell, Lis and Metikosh each had two of Ashland's 13 hits against the Bears.
  • In the first game of the day, Ashland had players with the first name of Delaney in consecutive spots in the batting order – Keith fifth, Maynard sixth and Lis seventh.
  • Against Bemidji, Maynard was 2-for-3, and senior pitcher Bryn Grabowski went the first 6 1/3 innings, yielding six hits, four runs (one earned) and a walk and striking out nine.
