Softball Finishes Florida Trip With Two Losses

The Ashland University softball team lost twice on Friday (March 7) to conclude its annual Florida Spring Break trip – 13-4 in five innings to Grand Valley State and 11-10 to Concord.

Against the Lakers, GVSU scored five times in the bottom of the second and third, and thrice in the fourth. Ashland got on the scoreboard in the third on RBI from sophomore left fielder Delaney Maynard (triple) and junior second baseman Danielle Robbins (error), then twice more in the fifth on a Maynard RBI double and a sacrifice fly from sophomore catcher Delaney Keith.

In the game against the Mountain Lions, Ashland took a 4-0 lead through three thanks to a Maynard RBI double and run-scoring single from senior first baseman Lily Rockwell in the first, a Maynard RBI double in the second, and a RBI safety by sophomore third baseman Sophia Martin in the third.

After Concord scored eight runs in the fourth, the Eagles cut their deficit to 8-5 in the fifth when Keith drove in a run on an error. Concord scored another run in the sixth and one in the seventh to make it an 11-5 contest, and AU's late rally fell one run short despite a five-spot in the seventh.

In that bottom of the seventh, RBIs were collected by Rockwell (single), Keith (error), sophomore right fielder Kate Kujawski (single) and junior center fielder Ashley Veldheer (single).
