No. 19 Eagles Sweep Concord On The Road

After fits and starts attempting to play the games due to inclement weather, the No. 19-ranked Ashland University baseball team got in two games at Concord on Monday (Feb. 24) afternoon, winning 7-5 in 10 innings and 6-3.

In the opener, the Eagles (4-1) scored in the top of the first on a double play, then, in the bottom of the first, Concord (2-5) came back with two runs. In the top of the third, junior right fielder Chris Franks launched his first home run of the young season, a solo shot, to knot the score at 2.

The Mountain Lions scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to regain the advantage at 4-2, but Ashland cut that deficit in half in the top of the sixth thanks to an RBI fielder's choice from graduate designated hitter Max Caron, then took the lead in the same inning on a two-run single from junior second baseman Gavin Dobbels.

Concord tied the game at 5 with a run in the bottom of the sixth, and the score remained there until the top of the 10th inning, when Ashland scored twice on run-scoring safeties from Caron and Dobbels.

Caron began the nightcap with an RBI single in the top of the first, then the Mountain Lions put up two runs in the bottom of the first and another in the bottom of the third.

In the top of the fourth, the Eagles put up a four-spot – an RBI single by senior catcher Ben Peltz and another Franks homer, a three-run shot to give AU the lead. Ashland added another run in the top of the sixth on a ground-ball double play.

CARTER KEEPS AU IN THE OPENER…AND THE REST OF THE STORY
  • Senior right-hander Chase Carter (2-0) went the final 4 2/3 innings to earn the victory in Game 1, allowing three hits, no runs and no walks and striking out five.

  • In Game 2, senior righty Ethan Stevens (1-0) earned the relief victory after 3 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing three hits, no runs and no walks and striking out one. Graduate righty Matt Hall got the last out for his first save of 2025.
  • Caron was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, and junior first baseman Sam Witt added a 2-for-4 effort with a run scored and a double.
