One of the best kicking seasons in Ashland University football history has led to redshirt freshman kicker
Manaki Watanabe being named a semifinalist for the 2025 Fred Mitchell Award.
Â
So far this fall, Watanabe is 20-for-21 on field goals, leading NCAA Division II in field-goal percentage (95.2) and total field goals. His field goal total this season is a new program record, and his 96 points are tied for the fifth-most in a season in Ashland football annals.
Â
Watanabe also has made 36 of 37 extra points this season, while putting 22 of 59 kickoffs in the end zone for touchbacks. His 59-yard field goal vs. Walsh on Nov. 1 at Jack Miller Stadium/Martinelli Field also is a new school standard.
Â
The Fred Mitchell Award Top 10 will be announced on Dec. 5. It recognizes kickers who were nominated for their terrific performances through the end of the regular season. The recipient of the award will be announced later in December.
Â
This year's semifinalist list includes 41 non-FBS placekickers from FCS, Division II, Division III, NAIA, NJCAA, and 3C2A programs who have distinguished themselves through exceptional on-field performance (distance, accuracy, clutch kicks), and meaningful service in the community.
