No. 6 AU Women Lose At Home To Warriors

All-time win No. 1,000 will have to wait at least one more game.

On Saturday (Nov. 15) night at the Sherrill Hudson Court at Kates Gymnasium, the No. 6-ranked Ashland University women's basketball team lost 81-77 to Wayne State – denying the Eagles the opportunity of becoming the 13th NCAA Division II team to earn 1,000 victories.

Ashland is 1-1, and the Warriors are 2-2.

A nip-and-tuck first quarter ended at a 19-19 tie, as each team went 8-of-16 from the field. The Warriors missed more opportunities, going 3-of-8 from the free-throw line.

Wayne State, however, came out and scored the first seven points of the second quarter. Ashland rallied, but trailed by a point at 36-35 at halftime, despite 11 points each from junior guard Lexi Howe and sophomore point guard Ashley Mullet.

Back-to-back Mullet 3-point field goals to start the second half put the Eagles on top, 41-36, and a Howe triple made it a 44-38 advantage. The Warriors were the ones, however, who led going into the fourth quarter at 59-58.

Sophomore guard Corri Vermilya's trey inside of the four-minute mark drew the game even at 71, then freshman forward Jenna Slates' two free throws put AU ahead 73-71 outside of the two-minute mark.

A Wayne State 3 in the final minute put it ahead at 78-75, and the Warriors led the rest of the way.

WRAPPING IT UP
  • Mullet scored a career-high 21 points, and Howe added 17 points.
  • For the second straight game to start her collegiate career, Slates nearly ended with a double-double (10 points, eight rebounds).
