No. 12 Eagles Top Storm At Home For 12th Straight Victory

Ashland University's No. 12-ranked women's basketball team earned a 65-43 win over Lake Erie on Saturday (Jan. 25) at the Sherrill Hudson Court at Kates Gymnasium – the Eagles' 12th decision in a row.

In moving to 25-0 all-time vs. the Storm, Ashland also moves to 18-3 overall and 10-1 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

Lake Erie is 3-13, 0-10.

Ashland wasted no time jumping ahead, moving out to a 7-2 lead, but the Storm worked its deficit down to 9-8. Thanks to a first 10 minutes in which they made their first eight free-throw attempts, the Eagles led 18-11 heading into the second period.

Lake Erie kept hanging around, as Ashland led 19-15 early in the second, then 22-17 later on. The Eagles kept the Storm off the board for the next 6½ minutes, however, and went into halftime with a 31-20 advantage.

Following a rough-shooting first half, Ashland came out in the third quarter hitting six of its first eight shots – resulting in a 43-22 lead and a Lake Erie timeout. By the end of the third stanza, the Eagles maintained their 21-point lead at 49-28.

THE DEFENSE KEEPS SHINING…AND THE REST OF THE STORY
  • As has been the case during the entire winning streak, Ashland's defense was strong – allowing the Storm to shoot 32.7 percent from the field and make 2-of-11 from beyond the arc.
  • Five Eagles scored in double figures on Saturday – senior forward Zoe Miller (13 points, nine rebounds, three assists), freshman point guard Ashley Mullet (12 points, three assists), senior guard Morgan Yoder (10 points), senior forward Hayley Smith (10 points, 12 rebounds) and sophomore guard Gia Casalinova (10 points, three steals, two blocks).
  • For Smith, it was her 10th double-double of the season. She also moved into 19th place on AU's all-time scoring list with 1,219 career points.
  • Ashland scored 23 points off 21 Lake Erie turnovers in the victory, and also had a decided 43-29 rebounding advantage.
