Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Dusty Sloan, Ashland University Director of Athletic Communications

No. 11 Eagle Women Extend Win Streak To 13 Games After Win At ODU

In a game in which baskets were hard to come by on both sides, Ashland University sophomore guard Lexi Howe found more than enough in the No. 11-ranked women's basketball team's 49-39 win at Ohio Dominican on Thursday (Jan. 30) night.

The Eagles' 13th consecutive victory moves them to 19-3 overall and 11-1 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference – remaining a half-game behind first-place Malone. The Panthers are 8-11, 3-8.

Howe posted a game-high 21 points on a career-high-tying six 3-point field goals, while adding three assists and a steal, in 23 minutes on the floor.

Ashland quickly went out to a 12-0 lead – all on a pair of triples each by senior guard Morgan Yoder and Howe. The Panthers, however, went on a run of their own – the 15-0 variety – to take the lead for the first time.

The game was tied at 15 after the first 10 minutes, then Howe made her fourth triple of the game early in the second stanza to put AU ahead again at 18-15. The Eagles scored the first six points of the second, allowed four points in the entire quarter, and took a 25-19 lead into halftime.

Howe had a season-high 14 points at the break.

Neither team could pull away from the other in the third quarter, and heading into the fourth, the Eagles' lead was 35-31.

Thanks in large part to Howe, who hit back-to-back triples early in the fourth, Ashland led by double digits again at 44-34. The Eagles had a 12-point lead again at 48-36 en route to the win.

THE DEFENSE KEEPS STIFLING…AND THE REST OF THE STORY
  • The calling card during AU's win streak has been its defense, and Thursday night was no different. The Eagles kept the Panthers to 32.0 percent from the field and 25.0 percent from 3-point range.
  • Yoder finished with 11 points, and senior forward Hayley Smith recorded her 11th double-double of 2024-25 (10 points and 14 rebounds, along with four assists and two steals). Smith now has 1,229 career points, moving into 18th on the program's all-time scoring list.
  • Ashland has won 22 straight against ODU since the start of the 2010-11 season.
  • The Eagles will go into the 2025-26 season having won 30 consecutive games in the month of January.
  • Ashland is 11-0 all-time as the No. 11-ranked team in the nation, and 346-23 all-time as a ranked team in NCAA Division II.
