No. 14 Eagles Clinch G-MAC Regular-Season Title After Game 1 Comeback Over Tiffin

Thanks to a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh inning of Friday's (May 3) opener at Tomassi Stadium and Donges Field at the Archer Ballpark Complex, the No. 14-ranked Ashland University baseball team clinched the 2024 Great Midwest Athletic Conference regular-season title for the first time.

The Eagles' 5-4 win in Game 1 on Friday was part of a split with Tiffin, in which the Dragons won 6-0 in the nightcap. Ashland is 38-10 overall and 24-7 in the Great Midwest.

Ashland's conference championship is its first since 2019 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Tiffin (22-24, 16-16) scored Friday's opener's first run in the top of the second, but Ashland responded with the tying run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by sophomore second baseman Gavin Dobbels.

A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth from junior left fielder Max Caron broke the tie, then Dobbels brought AU's third run home in the bottom of the fifth on a fielder's choice. The Dragons, however, put up a three-spot in the top of the sixth to re-take the advantage at 4-3.

That set up Dobbels, whose third RBI of the game on a seeing-eye single to right field in the bottom of the seventh tied the game at 4, then junior third baseman Jeremiah Cangelosi, whose RBI single brought home Dobbels with the game-winner.

To start Game 2, the Dragons posted a run in the top of the first, then they added another in the top of the third and three in the top of the fourth for a 5-0 advantage. Tiffin tacked on a sixth run in the top of the sixth for the final margin of victory.

POST-GAME NUGGETS
  • Junior center fielder Cam Miller went 4-for-4 with a double and two runs scored in the opener, and Dobbels drove in three runs while going 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base.
  • Sophomore left-handed pitcher John Essig (2-3) pitched 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief for the victory.
  • In Game 2, Caron was 2-3. Senior righty Justin Dyksma (3-2) yielded five hits, five runs and a walk and struck out two in 3 2/3 frames.
