Softball Rallies For Split At Dragons, Maynard Ties Two School Records In Game Two

Not only did Ashland University's softball team earn a doubleheader split at Tiffin on Sunday (April 7), but there was a bit of history made in the process.

The Eagles lost 5-0 and won 7-6 in eight innings on Sunday, and in the second game, freshman left fielder Delaney Maynard had a program-record-tying five hits and three doubles in helping AU rally. Maynard finished the nightcap 5-for-5 with four RBIs and a run scored – and is the fifth Eagle to have five hits in a game and the fourth to collect three doubles in a single contest.

Maynard becomes the first Eagle softball player to have five hits and three doubles in the same game.

Ashland is 14-17 overall and 8-6 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, while the Dragons are 20-16, 6-6.

Trailing 5-0 through four innings in Game 2, the Eagles began their comeback. Three runs in the top of the fifth cut into the deficit, as freshman designated player Delaney Keith started the rally with an RBI single, and Maynard followed with a two-run double.

Then, in the top of the seventh, junior first baseman Lily Rockwell's RBI single made it 5-4, and a Dragons error allowed Ashland to knot the game at 5-5. Maynard's two-run double put AU ahead 7-5 in the eighth, then the Eagles finished off the win despite Tiffin scoring once in the bottom of the eighth.

POST-GAME NUGGETS
  • In addition to Maynard, sophomore second baseman Danielle Robbins went 3-for-5 and scored twice in Ashland's 15-hit attack. Robbins also was 2-for-3 in Game 1, and is on a seven-game hitting streak (15-for-27, .556, nine runs scored, two RBIs).
  • Junior pitcher Bryn Grabowski (5-4) went the last three innings of the second game, allowing two hits, a run and a walk and striking out two.
  • In Game 1, junior pitcher Cassidy Shaffer (2-5) yielded six hits, four runs (three earned) and a walk in 2 1/3 innings.
