The No. 9-ranked Ashland University baseball team split the second and third games of its Great Midwest Athletic Conference set at Northwood on Saturday (April 6), winning 6-5 in nine innings and losing 6-5 late.

Going 1-1 on Saturday moves the Eagles to 23-5 overall and 10-3 in the Great Midwest, and the Timberwolves are 15-14, 10-5.

Game 1 saw Ashland take leads of 3-0 and 4-2 before Northwood scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning. In the top of the ninth, sophomore pinch-hitter
Collin Overholt's two-run single put the Eagles in the lead for good.

In the nightcap, Ashland trailed 3-0 after the first quarter, then came back with two runs in the top of the second. Down 4-2 going into the seventh inning, the Eagles scored thrice in the top of the frame on a two-run double by sophomore third baseman
Ryan Shimek and an RBI single by sophomore second baseman
Gavin Dobbels to take the lead.

Northwood, however, put up two runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn Saturday's split.

POST-GAME NUGGETS
- In the opener, senior right-handed pitcher Zac Common (3-0) tossed 3 1/3 strong innings to get the victory, allowing a hit, an unearned run and a walk and striking out two.
- Overholt drove in two, while junior left fielder Max Caron went 2-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and an RBI.
- Junior center fielder Cam Miller went 2-for-4 in the second game.
- Common (3-1) allowed two unearned runs and two walks in the seventh in Game 2.
