No. 9 Baseball Wins Series Finale At Timberwolves For Split

An offensive explosion on Sunday (April 7) afternoon allowed No. 9-ranked Ashland University baseball to earn a series split at Northwood, 15-3 in eight innings.

The Eagles finish the weekend at 24-5 overall and 11-3 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference – staying in the race for first place in the league. The Timberwolves are 15-15, 10-6.

Sunday marks the fifth game in 2024 in which Ashland has scored at least 15 runs, and the 13th time this season that the Eagles have scored 11 runs or more.

The Eagles put up four runs in the top of the first inning thanks to a two-run single from sophomore right fielder Chris Franks, a run-scoring single by junior designated hitter Ian Sanders, and an RBI safety from sophomore catcher Collin Overholt.

Northwood scored two runs in the bottom of the first, but Ashland took both of those runs back on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of sophomore second baseman Gavin Dobbels and Dobbels scoring from the front end of an attempted double steal in the top of the fourth.

A run-scoring single from junior third baseman Jeremiah Cangelosi in the top of the seventh made it a 7-2 game, and eight more insurance runs came in the eighth when junior center fielder Cam Miller hit a double, then scored on a passed ball, followed by a bases-loaded walk drawn by junior first baseman Ben Peltz and a Sanders grand slam.

POST-GAME NUGGETS
  • Sanders was 3-for-5 with the slam (his second of the season), a stolen base, five RBIs and two runs scored. Cangelosi was 3-for-3 (his ninth game with three or hits in 2024) with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Matt Hall (1-0) went the first 5 1/3 innings, striking out two and allowing two runs, two hits and six walks. Hall is the 12th Eagle pitcher to earn a win this spring.
