Baseball Wins Fifth Straight, Off To Best Nine-Game Start In Five Years

For a second consecutive day, a six-run inning lifted Ashland University's baseball team to a win on its Florida Spring Break trip.

On Thursday (March 7) afternoon, it was a six-run bottom of the fifth which propelled the Eagles to a 6-3 win over Seton Hill. It was Ashland's fifth consecutive victory overall, and put AU's record at 8-1 – its best nine-game start since 2019.

The Griffins are 8-4, and saw their four-game win streak snapped.

Seton Hill scored single runs in the top of the first and third innings, then Ashland threatened with runners on second and third and no outs in the bottom of the fifth. Graduate shortstop Devin Hukill delivered the game-tying two-run single, then junior first baseman Sam Witt launched a grand slam to put AU ahead for the first time at 6-2.

POST-GAME NUGGETS
  • Keeping Seton Hill at bay while the offense gave the Eagles the lead was junior right-hander Cam Scott (2-0), who struck out seven and allowed nine hits, three runs and a walk over the first 6 2/3 innings.
  • Sophomore righty Drew Becker earned his first save of the season with 2 1/3 scoreless innings. He struck out four and allowed one hit.
  • Of AU's eight hits, two each came from Hukill, sophomore catcher Collin Overholt and junior designated hitter Ben Peltz.
