Six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Ashland University's baseball team to an 11-8 win over Wayne State (Neb.) on Wednesday (March 6) night in Florida.
Â
The Eagles are off to a 7-1 start through eight games for the second year in a row. They have scored exactly 11 runs in each of the last three games, and have plated double-digit runs five times so far in 2024.
Â
After the Wildcats (8-5) scored two unearned runs in the top of the first, the Eagles responded quickly with four runs in the bottom of the frame on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch drawn by junior third baseman
Jeremiah Cangelosi, a bases-loaded walk drawn by junior first baseman
Sam Witt, and a two-out error which plated two runs.
Â
The early back-and-forth continued with five Wayne State runs in the top of the second, then the game settled down until the bottom of the fifth, when Ashland cut the deficit to 7-5 after a pinch-RBI single from junior
Ben Peltz.
Â
In the bottom of the eighth, the Eagles took the lead with six runs – half of those crossing the plate on one play via an error.
