Softball Splits Two At Home With Yellow Jackets

Ashland University's softball team was one half-inning away from a doubleheader sweep on Monday (March 25) at Deb Miller Field at the Archer Ballpark Complex, ending the day with a 6-2 win in Game 2 following a 2-1 loss in the opener.

The Eagles are 11-14 overall and 5-3 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, thanks to five wins in their last six games, and the Yellow Jackets are 11-18, 4-2.

Ashland is 5-3 at its new home this season, and 18-8 there overall. In the previous two seasons, the Eagles were 8-20 in home games.

After 5½ scoreless innings to start Game 1, freshman left fielder Delaney Maynard snuck an opposite-field home run to left field for the contest's first run. Cedarville, however, took the lead in the top of the seventh with two unearned runs.

In the nightcap, Ashland struck first in the bottom of the second, scoring twice thanks in large part to a pair of Yellow Jacket errors. Then, in the bottom of the third, a run-scoring single by junior designated player Cassidy Shaffer put AU ahead 3-0.

Cedarville got on the board in Game 2 with a run in the top of the fourth, but with two outs in the bottom of the frame, Maynard delivered an RBI single, then first baseman Lily Rockwell a two-run double, to move the Eagle lead to 6-1.

POST-GAME NUGGETS
  • In Game 1, sophomore pitcher Delaney Lis (3-5) took the tough-luck loss, authoring a complete-game seven-hitter, allowing two unearned runs and a walk and striking out one.
  • Maynard went 2-for-3 with the home run.
  • Freshman Madison Milligan (3-2) turned in her first collegiate complete game in Game 2, twirling a six-hitter and allowing two runs and a walk.
  • Sophomore second baseman Danielle Robbins stole three bases and went 2-for-4 at the plate while scoring two runs, Shaffer was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Rockwell finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a double and a run scored.
