Ashland University's softball team was one half-inning away from a doubleheader sweep on Monday (March 25) at Deb Miller Field at the Archer Ballpark Complex, ending the day with a 6-2 win in Game 2 following a 2-1 loss in the opener.
Â
The Eagles are 11-14 overall and 5-3 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, thanks to five wins in their last six games, and the Yellow Jackets are 11-18, 4-2.
Â
Ashland is 5-3 at its new home this season, and 18-8 there overall. In the previous two seasons, the Eagles were 8-20 in home games.
Â
After 5½ scoreless innings to start Game 1, freshman left fielder
Delaney Maynard snuck an opposite-field home run to left field for the contest's first run. Cedarville, however, took the lead in the top of the seventh with two unearned runs.
Â
In the nightcap, Ashland struck first in the bottom of the second, scoring twice thanks in large part to a pair of Yellow Jacket errors. Then, in the bottom of the third, a run-scoring single by junior designated player
Cassidy Shaffer put AU ahead 3-0.
Â
Cedarville got on the board in Game 2 with a run in the top of the fourth, but with two outs in the bottom of the frame, Maynard delivered an RBI single, then first baseman
Lily Rockwell a two-run double, to move the Eagle lead to 6-1.
