On Day 1 of the annual Florida Spring Trip on Saturday (March 2), Ashland University's softball team lost 2-1 to No. 19 Charleston, then came back and run-ruled Bridgeport in 4½ innings, 13-1.
The Eagles (4-5) rapped 12 hits in the victory over the Knights, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first, five in the second, four in the third and one in the fourth.
Against the Golden Eagles, Ashland scored its run in the top of the first, but Charleston scored twice in the second for the final margin of victory.
POST-GAME NUGGETS
- The win over Bridgeport saw freshman designated player Delaney Maynard go 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored, and junior first baseman Lily Rockwell end 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Freshman shortstop Sophia Smithnosky drove in two runs, and freshman left fielder Kate Kujawski went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
- Junior Bryn Grabowski (1-2, two scoreless innings), junior Cassidy Shaffer (two scoreless innings) and freshman Madison Milligan (one run in one inning) combined for the five-inning seven-hitter.
- Versus Charleston, Shaffer was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Sophomore Delaney Lis (1-2) allowed two runs in two innings, while sophomore Mady Hannahs (2 2/3 innings) and Shaffer (1 1/3 innings) combined for four scoreless frames of relief.
