Balanced Offense Results In Men’s Soccer’s Second Straight Win

Ashland University's men's soccer team earned its second consecutive victory on Thursday (Oct. 3) night at Ferguson Field, as the Eagles topped Cedarville, 3-1.

With a third straight win over the Yellow Jackets and fourth in the last five meetings, Ashland moved to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. Cedarville is 3-5-1, 1-3-1.

"It shows what you do if you get an early goal," said Ashland head coach Nick Roberts. "Part of the problem this season so far, up until the last couple games, we haven't been scoring, and opposing teams tend to hit us late.

"Today was good. The team has goals in them. They're talented."

The Eagles scored an early goal to take the lead, as, in the fourth minute, senior midfielder Oliver Lovell scored his first goal of 2024 on an assists from senior forward Pedro Faria and senior midfielder Andre Dutra – each their first of the season.

Then, in the 28th minute, senior forward Rodri Fernandez potted his first goal of the season, unassisted, for his first tally of the fall and a 2-0 AU lead.

Faria then went 1-on-1 with the Yellow Jackets goalkeeper and scored his second goal of the campaign for a 3-0 AU advantage in the 39th minute. Dutra picked up his second assist of the first half and of the season.

Dutra primarily played midfield on Thursday, but moved to the back later due to an injury.

"The last two games, he's been mammoth, and he's been a big part of why we've won the last two games," Roberts noted. "He's back to the Dutra of old, and he's going to keep going and keep working hard. He's going to be great for us."

The Yellow Jackets posted their goal in the 84th minute when Benjamin Carman scored on a penalty kick.

BERGLUND LOOKS THE PART…AND THE REST OF THE STORY
  • Freshman goalkeeper David Berglund made his first collegiate start on Thursday night, making one save.
  • "He was ready for it," Roberts said. "We had to throw him into the deep end. He's going to be with us for four years. That gives us an insight into what he's going to be like."
  • Ashland out-shot Cedarville, 15-7, and the Yellow Jackets had a 5-3 advantage in corner kick.
