A goal from senior forward
Pedro Faria in the 81
st minute and a clean sheet lifted Ashland University's men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Walsh on Senior Night at Ferguson Field on Saturday (Oct. 12) night.
The Eagles improve to 4-0-1 in their last five games, and are 5-5-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference – now tied for fifth place in the league table.
"The idea is, we're in a hole. We have to keep digging," said Ashland head coach
Nick Roberts. "That's the message. Find a way.
"We can't control results. We can control the way we play. Every game, one at a time, make it a (World) Cup final mentality, and try to win it."
Walsh is 3-7-1, 2-5.
Faria was 1-on-1 with the Walsh goalkeeper and potted his third goal of the season following a long assist from graduate forward
Rodri Jimenez, his first of the fall.
"We have character," Faria said. "We all put the effort together. We've dug ourselves out of this hole, we're back to .500. It's about keep fighting until the last whistle. We keep working. We're going to work more."
That goal was enough for the Eagle defense, led by senior goalkeeper
Ty Bowden, who finished with a one-save shutout – his second of the season.
"A lot of fight," Roberts said. "Won the game."
