No. 1 AU Women’s Second-Half Surge Results In Home Win Over Cedarville

Ashland University head women's soccer coach Cayleb Paulino likes that his team is unpredictable when it comes to who scores from game to game.

What hasn't been unpredictable is the outcome of most of the No. 1-ranked Eagles' games so far in 2023. The Eagles earned a 3-1 victory, their third straight, over Cedarville on Saturday (Sept. 30) night at Ferguson Field.

Ashland improves to 8-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, and is second in the league behind Northwood, who has a game in hand. The Yellow Jackets are 7-3, 4-2.

NOTABLES
  • After an early go-ahead goal was wiped out due to an offsides call, the Eagles went up 1-0 in the ninth minute when freshman midfielder Ella Schneider scored her first collegiate tally, unassisted, on a loose ball 20 yards away.
  • In the 39th minute, the Yellow Jackets knotted the score at 1 when Seren Johnson scored on a cross from Katie Ulmer. It was just the second goal AU had allowed in 8½ games this season.
  • Sophomore forward Dani Hicks put the Eagles back on top in the 51st minute on her team-leading fifth goal, 1-on-1 with the Cedarville goalkeeper. Junior midfielder Tori Haggit's assist was her first point at AU.
  • Freshman forward Sydney Polen pilfered the ball just past midfield and took it all the way in for her third goal of 2023 in the 73rd minute.
  • Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Simon made three saves in the victory, as Ashland had a 13-4 lead in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Ashland is 5-2 all-time against Cedarville, including back-to-back conference tournament championship game victories.

QUOTABLES
  • "We talked about not letting them get the wide areas and crossing it, and the one time they did, they made us pay," Paulino said of Cedarville's goal. "The group handled it well. Second half, we made adjustments and made it tough on them."
  • "It's tough to figure us out," Paulino said. "It's just a testament to the group, and next man up. I'm pretty pleased with the effort tonight."
  • "We told our group, you've got to start telling your friends. It's a cool environment," said Paulino of a large home crowd on Saturday night. "We thrive off that environment. It created a tough environment for Cedarville to play in tonight."
  • Said Hicks, "It's so special because of how we have each other's back all the time, and if one of us is down, the other is picking us up. We sincerely want to play and fight for one another. That's so special to have that kind of friendship on and off the field."

UP NEXT
Ashland will go back on the road on Wednesday (Oct. 4) at 8 p.m. to take on Lake Erie (1-7-1, 0-5).
