Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Dusty Sloan, Ashland University Director of Athletic Communications

Late First-Half Flurry Lifts No. 1 AU Women Past Walsh At Home

The No. 1-ranked Ashland University women's soccer team proved why it deserves that ranking on Wednesday (Sept. 27) afternoon, notching a 4-0 Great Midwest Athletic Conference win over Walsh at Ferguson Field.

With a fifth consecutive clean sheet for the first time since the middle of last season, the Eagles improve to 7-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the conference. This is AU's best start through eight games since 2015 (8-0).

The Cavaliers are 5-1-1, 3-1.

NOTABLES
  • After no goals in the first 36 minutes, the Eagles potted three in a three-minute barrage. In the 37th minute, freshman midfielder Clara Richardson scored her second goal of the season on a feed from junior midfielder Merrik Mihalek, her team-leading fourth assist, and freshman forward Sydney Polen, her first collegiate helper.
  • In the 39th minute, senior midfielder Peyton Starner scored her first goal of the season, and Richardson's assist was the first of her AU career. Then, in the 40th minute, junior midfielder Avery Rosso converted a penalty kick into her first tally of the fall.
  • Ashland's second PK goal of the game – this one from senior forward Allison King for her third goal of 2023 – made it a 4-0 game in the 66th minute.
  • Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Simon dropped her season goals-against average to 0.13 following yet another shutout and four saves.
  • Ashland out-shot Walsh, 19-6, and took 15 of 16 of the game's corner kicks.

QUOTABLES
  • "I think we're building confidence," Ashland head coach Cayleb Paulino said of 10 goals in the last two games. "One big thing for us is our depth, and that's two games in a row that we've gotten goals from subbing on. When we sub, we take advantage."
  • "The goal is to go 1-0 to start (the week)," Paulino said. "Mid-week, we handled it real well. Managed it, and put goals away."
  • Said Simon, in her first season at AU following transfer from NCAA Division I Youngstown State, "We have a lot of confidence in each other, so we build off our confidence and our trust. That's been the most beneficial thing, and our communication has been strong. To keep a clean sheet, it's a team effort."

UP NEXT
Ashland will stay at home to take on Cedarville (6-2, 3-1 prior to Wednesday's game at Kentucky Wesleyan) in another key league game on Saturday (Sept. 30) at 6:30 p.m.
