The second career brace for fifth-year midfielder
Oliver Whaley helped Ashland University's men's soccer team to a 3-3 tie on Saturday (Sept. 16) at Malone.
Thanks to a pair of second-half goals to salvage the draw, the Eagles move to 1-4-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, while the Pioneers are 1-2-2, 0-0-2.
NOTABLES
- After falling behind 1-0 in the 14th minute, Whaley's third goal of the season on a penalty kick knotted the game at 1 in the 18th minute. Malone scored in the 24th and 40th minutes to go into halftime with a 3-1 advantage.
- In the second half, senior midfielder Vander Rocha potted his first goal of 2023 in the 58th minute on an assist from Whaley, his third of the season. Then, in the 62nd minute, Whaley's second goal of the afternoon and fourth of the campaign lifted AU back to a 3-all tie following an assist from fifth-year defender Joao Cardoso (his first as an Eagle).
- Malone out-shot Ashland by a 10-8 count, and took all three of the game's corner kicks.
