Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Dusty Sloan, Ashland University Director of Athletic Communications

Eagle Men Win Great Midwest Opener At Home Vs. Cavaliers

Ashland University head coach Nick Roberts said Wednesday (Sept. 13) night's Great Midwest Athletic Conference lid-lifter at Ferguson Field against Walsh was the start of a brand-new season.

Following an 0-4 start to the campaign, all non-conference games, the Eagles came out against the Cavaliers and scored in both halves en route to a 2-0 victory. Ashland is 1-4 overall and 1-0 in the Great Midwest, while Walsh is 2-1-1, 0-1.

The Eagles snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Cavaliers.

NOTABLES
  • In the 25th minute, after the Eagles hit the right post, then the left post, on shot attempts, fifth-year defender Joao Cardoso scored his first goal as an Eagle on passes from junior midfielder Teddy Togliatti (first assist of season) and fifth-year midfielder Oliver Whaley (second assist of season).
  • Then, in the 82nd minute, junior forward Pedro Faria's first goal at AU, unassisted, gave the Eagles the extra cushion they were looking for.
  • Senior goalkeeper Zander Throckmorton had his second consecutive strong outing, recording his first collegiate shutout on Wednesday while making four saves.
  • Ashland out-shot Walsh, 14-12, and the Eagles had 10 of the 12 corner kicks in the game.

QUOTABLES
  • "This week, we talked a lot about…we're not going to use that as an excuse anymore," Roberts said of his team's early rash of injuries. "We know we've had injuries, we know we've had bad luck, let's just get better and start winning games."
  • Of Throckmorton, Roberts said, "Unbelievable. But that's his story. I just always had this feeling. He's been invested for so long, give the guy a chance, and there you go."
  • "It feels great," Throckmorton said, giving credit to his defenders – sophomore Francesco Chiappo, junior Andre Dutra, Cardoso and freshman Sergio Ruiz. "We stayed composed and we won the game, kept the shutout."
  • "I'm so happy to be here. I'm so grateful for the chance to play," Throckmorton said.
