ROAD STATEMENT! No. RV Eagles Top No. 8 Lakers To Open Season

The women's soccer series between Ashland University and Grand Valley State has been one of runs.
 
After the Eagles went 9-0-1 in the first 10 games of the series, the Lakers turned the tables and went 20-0-1 in the next 21 meetings.
 
On Thursday (Aug. 31) night in Allendale, Mich., following a 2-1 win at GVSU in the spring of 2021, Ashland returned to enemy territory – to take a 1-0 decision for a second straight victory over the Lakers in the 2023 opener for both teams.
 
NOTABLES
  • Thursday night's lone tally came in the 10th minute on an own goal by the Lakers.
  • Senior goalkeeper Mackenzie Simon, in her first game at Ashland, backstopped the Eagles' first clean sheet against Grand Valley State since 2018. Simon made six saves to open her Eagle career.
  • The Lakers out-shot AU, 11-5, and had twice as many corner kicks, 6-3.

  • "We grew this game," said Ashland head coach Cayleb Paulino. "We talk about getting into things early, and we talk about believing. We talked about the culture that we've built…it's a lot of kids that had big moments for us last year, and are asked to be bigger players in bigger moments."
  • "I told our group, great that we had a result at Grand Valley State. We can't be satisfied and can't have a letdown on Saturday," Paulino said. "We're going to prepare ourselves to be our best version on Saturday."
