Eagle Baseball Drops Two To Chargers At Home To End Regular Season

Ashland University's baseball team lost twice on Saturday (May 6) to Hillsdale on Senior Day at Tomassi Stadium and Donges Field at the Archer Ballpark Complex, 13-3 and 8-5, to finish the 2023 regular season.

The Eagles go into the 2023 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament at 33-17 overall and 22-10 in the league, and the Chargers are 25-24, 20-12.

Hillsdale scored five runs in the top of the first inning before the Eagles got to bat in the opener, then added three more in the second for an early 8-0 lead. Ashland got on the board in the third when sophomore center fielder Cam Miller drove in two with a single, but Hillsdale responded with a run in the fourth for a 9-2 advantage.

Hillsdale put up a four-spot in the sixth, and an RBI groundout from freshman pinch-hitter Gavin Dobbels in the seventh inning rounded out the Game 1 scoring.

In Game 2, the Chargers jumped on top again, scoring five runs in the top of the first. Ashland came back in the bottom of the frame with a run when fifth-year third baseman Seth Schroeder scored on a wild pitch.

Hillsdale made it a 6-1 game with a run in the second, then Schroeder drove in two with a single in the bottom to cut the deficit to 6-3. Sophomore first baseman Sam Witt's run-scoring single in the second made it 6-4, but the scoring stopped until the fifth, when the Chargers added another run for a 7-4 gap.

In the eighth, Hillsdale scored another run to make it 8-4. Redshirt freshman right fielder Chris Franks' RBI double in the ninth got the Eagles closer,
