Ashland University's baseball team lost twice on Saturday (May 6) to Hillsdale on Senior Day at Tomassi Stadium and Donges Field at the Archer Ballpark Complex, 13-3 and 8-5, to finish the 2023 regular season.
The Eagles go into the 2023 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament at 33-17 overall and 22-10 in the league, and the Chargers are 25-24, 20-12.
Hillsdale scored five runs in the top of the first inning before the Eagles got to bat in the opener, then added three more in the second for an early 8-0 lead. Ashland got on the board in the third when sophomore center fielder
Cam Miller drove in two with a single, but Hillsdale responded with a run in the fourth for a 9-2 advantage.
Hillsdale put up a four-spot in the sixth, and an RBI groundout from freshman pinch-hitter
Gavin Dobbels in the seventh inning rounded out the Game 1 scoring.
In Game 2, the Chargers jumped on top again, scoring five runs in the top of the first. Ashland came back in the bottom of the frame with a run when fifth-year third baseman
Seth Schroeder scored on a wild pitch.
Hillsdale made it a 6-1 game with a run in the second, then Schroeder drove in two with a single in the bottom to cut the deficit to 6-3. Sophomore first baseman
Sam Witt's run-scoring single in the second made it 6-4, but the scoring stopped until the fifth, when the Chargers added another run for a 7-4 gap.
In the eighth, Hillsdale scored another run to make it 8-4. Redshirt freshman right fielder
Chris Franks' RBI double in the ninth got the Eagles closer,
NOTABLES
- Game 1 saw Miller go 2-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore righthander Cam Scott (6-4) allowed four hits, five runs and a walk in 2/3 of an inning.
- The nightcap featured a four-hit game from Schroeder (4-for-5, two RBIs, run scored) for the second day in a row. Miller was 2-for-5 with a run scored, and Witt was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
- Senior righty Brad Wolfe (0-2) was the tough-luck loser, walking the only batter he faced on Senior Day and giving up a run.
