MASON, Ohio – In a rematch of the last two teams in the 2022 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament, Ashland University's baseball team lost a 7-5 decision to Walsh in the 2023 Great Midwest Tournament opener on Wednesday (May 10) at Legacy Field.
The Eagles, the No. 3 seed, are 33-18, and the Cavaliers, the No. 6 seed, are 27-22.
Walsh scored in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly, then added another run in the second on a solo home run. Ashland dented the scoreboard in the bottom of the third when sophomore center fielder
Cam Miller smacked an RBI triple, then fifth-year left fielder
Seth Schroeder tied the game at 2 with a run-scoring single.
The Eagles took the lead in the fifth when sophomore shortstop
Jeremiah Cangelosi hit an RBI single to right, but the Cavaliers re-took the advantage in the seventh with two runs.
Trailing 4-3 at the seventh-inning stretch, Ashland took the lead back in the seventh when redshirt freshman right fielder
Chris Franks, who left five runners on base in the game prior to that point, made sure there wouldn't be any more. His two-run double put the Eagles ahead, 5-4.
Walsh, however, kept the back-and-forth going in the eighth, taking the lead at 7-5 thanks to three more runs.
