MASON, Ohio – A three-run 10
th-inning home run by Trevecca Nazarene pinch-hitter David Milam ended Ashland University's baseball team's time at the 2023 Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament, as the Trojans took a 6-3 decision from the Eagles at Legacy Field.
Ashland is 33-19, and TNU is 30-20. It was the first meeting between the two teams with both as Great Midwest entries.
The Trojans got on the scoreboard first with a run in the bottom of the first inning, then they extended their lead in the fifth with a pair of runs. Ashland's first run came in the eighth on a Trojan error, then senior pinch-hitter
Nolan Perrin's RBI single cut the deficit to 3-2 with one out in the eighth.
When freshman second baseman
Gavin Dobbels hit into an RBI fielder's choice for the second out of the eighth, Ashland knotted the game at 3 – which would later lead to Milam's heroics.
NOTABLES
- Sophomore catcher Ben Peltz was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
- Another sophomore, right-handed pitcher Cam Scott (6-5), took the loss out of the bullpen after allowing two hits, three runs and three walks and striking out one in 3 2/3 innings.
