In a Great Midwest Athletic Conference doubleheader played on Friday (March 17) at Heidelberg, Ashland University's baseball team split with host Findlay, losing Game 1, 11-10 in nine innings, and taking Game 2, 7-2.
The Eagles finish the first conference weekend of the season at 10-6 overall and 3-1 in the Great Midwest, and the Oilers are 7-9, 1-3.
In the nightcap, Ashland led 3-1 going into the fifth inning, then pulled away in the top of the fifth when sophomore second baseman
Ian Sanders cleared the bases with a double for a 6-2 advantage.
Game 1 saw Ashland have leads of 3-0 after a half-inning, 4-3 after 2½, 5-4 after 3½, 7-4 after 4½, 9-6 after 5½ and 10-8 after 6½ before the Oilers won in extra innings.
NOTABLES
- Sophomore right-hander Cam Scott (2-1) earned the relief win in Game 2, tossing four shutout innings, striking out four and allowing two hits and a run. Freshman right fielder Chris Franks was 2-for-3 with a triple, a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs, and Sanders drove in three.
- Game 1 saw Ashland collect 18 hits in the loss, including three each from sophomore center fielder Cam Miller (3-for-5, triple, runs scored), sophomore first baseman Sam Witt (3-for-3, three runs scored, RBI), Sanders (3-for-4, runs scored, two RBIs) and sophomore shortstop Jeremiah Cangelosi (3-for-5, double, run scored, two RBIs). Cangelosi drove in 10 runs in the four-game series.
- Junior righty Zac Common (2-1) gave up five hits, three runs and four walks and whiffed three in three innings out of the Eagle bullpen.
