AU Softball Splits On Day 2 Of Music City Invitational

On Sunday (Feb. 19) just outside of Nashville, Tenn., Ashland University's softball team split two games to end play at the Music City Invitational.

The Eagles (1-3) topped Missouri S&T, 5-4, then lost to Maryville, 7-5.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The win against the Miners featured a four-run bottom of the fifth inning. Senior center fielder Lauren McMillin drove in two runs with a triple, then senior third baseman Hailey Struckman followed with a run-scoring triple. Sophomore designated player Cassidy Shaffer ended the fifth with a sacrifice fly.
  • Junior second baseman Hailey Krinn drove in a run with a single in the bottom of the sixth – a key tally with S&T scoring twice in the top of the seventh.
  • Struckman was 3-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, while sophomore first baseman Lily Rockwell and senior right fielder Haylee Frost each had two of AU's 10 hits, and Frost scored twice. Senior pitcher Josie Duncan (1-1) pitched four innings of relief for the win, allowing four hits, two runs and a walk and striking out two.
  • Ashland scored twice in the top of the first against Maryville, as Struckman and Shaffer recorded back-to-back RBI doubles. The Saints scored two runs each in the first, second and third, and a run in the sixth. The Eagles scored once in the fifth on freshman third baseman Amanda Kolar's RBI triple, and twice in the seventh when senior pinch-runner Kaitlyn Carney scored on a wild pitch, and Krinn drove in a run with a single.
  • Freshman center fielder Sidney Payton was 2-for-2 and scored twice, and Shaffer (0-2) yielded nine hits, seven runs (three earned) and no walks and struck out one over six innings.
