To open the 2023 season, Ashland University's softball team went 0-2 on Saturday (Feb. 17) at the Music City Invitational in Smyrna, Tenn.

The Eagles lost 3-2 to Illinois Springfield, then 9-5 to McKendree in two regional matchups.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Against the Prairie Stars, Ashland tied the game at 1 in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single by sophomore first baseman Lily Rockwell. UIS scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, and the Eagles scored once in the top of the seventh when senior center fielder Lauren McMillin drove in a run with a single.
- Senior right fielder Haylee Frost was 2-for-3, as Ashland collected eight hits. Sophomore pitcher Cassidy Shaffer (0-1) came in for the sixth inning, and allowed a hit, two runs (one earned) and two walks and struck out one.
- Game 2 against McKendree saw Ashland fall behind 7-0 before scoring four times in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman shortstop Ashley Veldheer drove in a run with a single, sophomore left fielder Laney Eller brought two runs home after reaching on an error, and Frost had a sacrifice fly.
- McKendree scored twice in the top of the fifth, and the scoring ended with sophomore catcher Rachel Reuter's run-scoring single in the bottom of the sixth.
- Senior pitcher Josie Duncan (0-1) yielded eight hits, seven runs (six earned) and three walks over three innings.
