Needing three points to improve its chances to play host to a Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal and potentially get into the NCAA Division II postseason, Ashland University's men's soccer got just that following a 3-1 win over Cedarville on Wednesday (Oct. 25) night at Ferguson Field.
The Eagles moved into the No. 3 spot in the conference table at 6-7-3 overall and 6-3-3 in the league, while the Yellow Jackets are 8-5-3, 5-4-3, and occupy the No. 5 spot in the league.
Ashland won in a rematch of the 2022 Great Midwest Tournament title game at Tiffin, which the Eagles also were victorious in, 2-1.
NOTABLES
- Ashland broke the scoreless tie in the 40th minute, when senior midfielder Matthew Roberts took an errant Cedarville header and snuck the ball into the right side of the Yellow Jackets net for his first tally of 2023.
- In the 66th minute, junior midfielder Sam Jordan stood in front of the Cedarville net, and took a quality cross from freshman midfielder Sergio Ruiz and made it a 2-0 Eagle advantage. It was Jordan's second goal of 2023, and Ruiz's first assist.
- Cedarville got on the board in the 70th minute on a long free kick goal by Caleb Knight, but the Eagles put the game away in the 80th minute when senior midfielder Vander Rocha worked past a Yellow Jacket defender then netted his team-best eighth goal of the campaign with the left foot.
- Junior goalkeeper Ty Bowden made eight saves on Wednesday night, as Cedarville out-shot AU by a 22-8 count. The Yellow Jackets also had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

- "It was a good game," said Ashland head coach Nick Roberts. "We changed our formation a little bit tonight, and it worked well. I thought we played well."
- Jordan, who was in the game to score his goal following a substitution after a yellow card, said, "The game changes very quickly, and circumstances come up. We had to change the shape of our team this week. Same happens in a game. Luckily, I got into the position (to score)."
- "We need three points in every single game that we play from now on," Jordan said. "All of the boys fought very, very hard tonight. We held firm."
