Three Second-Half Goals, Clean Sheet Leads No. 1-Ranked Eagles To Home Win

The No. 1-ranked Ashland University women's soccer team remained undefeated in 2023 following a 3-0 win at Ferguson Field over Lake Erie on Saturday (Oct. 14) night.

Thanks to a seventh consecutive victory and a third consecutive clean sheet, the Eagles move to 12-0-1 overall and 8-0-1 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The Storm is 1-11-1, 0-9.

Ashland's win came on Senior Day, as defender Maddy Grabowski and midfielders Vanessa Menchofer and Peyton Starner were honored in pre-game festivities.

  • Then, in the 52nd minute, junior forward Tori Haggit potted her first goal as an Eagle following a scramble in front of the Storm net – becoming the 13th AU player to score a goal in 2023. Sophomore forward Dani Hicks picked up her third assist of the season.
  • Off a free kick in the 72nd minute, freshman midfielder Clara Richardson netted her third goal of the campaign on assists from junior forward Macayla Harris (first of the season) and freshman forward Sydney Polen (second).

QUOTABLES
  • "Today was a little bit of a test for us," said Ashland head coach Cayleb Paulino. "With the elements, kind of bunkered in in the first half. The group responded well, and when you keep a clean sheet, you give yourself an opportunity."
  • "It's great to see Tori get on the sheet for us," Paulino said. "She's been starting for us and creating chances. Hopefully, she builds momentum off that."
UP NEXT
A game for first place in the Great Midwest on Tuesday (Oct. 17) at 2:30 p.m. at Northwood (10-2-2, 9-0-1).

"I think both groups match up really well," said Paulino. "It's a quick turnaround for both of us, and it's not easy to play on the road, so we'll see how we handle it."
