Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Eagle Women Start League Season 2-0 After Home Win Over Oilers

In a complete team performance on Saturday (Sept. 10) afternoon at Ferguson Field, Ashland University's women's soccer team took a 2-0 decision from Findlay in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference matchup.

The Eagles, winners of four games in a row, are 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the Great Midwest. The Oilers are 2-2-1, 1-1.

"It's the beginning of season two," Ashland head coach Cayleb Paulino said. "The non-conference is season one, conference is season two, and season three is you win or go home. We preached this last year, if you go 2-0 more weeks than not, you put yourself in a really good opportunity."

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Ashland jumped ahead 1-0 in the 16th minute when sophomore forward McKinley Mendenhall crossed in to freshman forward Dani Hicks, who potted her second goal of the fall. Mendenhall's assist was her fifth of 2022 – tying her total in all of 2021.
  • "We've been stressing for our wide players to be creative and go one v one," Paulino said. "Dani filled in the back side, and put it in the back of the net."
  • In the 35th minute, senior midfielder Georgia Nagucki scored her second goal of the campaign on a penalty kick. Sophomore forward Macayla Harris drew the penalty kick with a foul in the box.
  • "It was funny, because me and (graduate assistant coach) Deijah (Swihart) were looking around, and nobody wanted to step up and take the penalty," Paulino noted. "A player that's done it before, that has a lot of composure in front of a net and can strike the ball. Georgia delivered again."
  • Said Nagucki, a transfer from Slippery Rock, "I feel like the whole team is getting more and more comfortable. I'm really happy with the performance. I like competing. The team is very technical."

THE WRAP-UP
  • Ashland doubled up Findlay in shots, 10-5. Senior goalkeeper Bri Rogers turned in the clean sheet with three saves. It is the 10th shutout of Rogers' Eagle career.
  • The Eagles had eight of the game's nine corner kicks.

UP NEXT
Ashland's women will return to the pitch on Thursday (Sept. 15) at 1 p.m. at Tiffin (3-2-1, 1-1).

"Our energy is 100-percent better," Nagucki said of the four-game win streak. "A lot of players are stepping up big time."
