AU Volleyball Earns Second Straight League Sweep At Home

Playing a second Great Midwest Athletic Conference match at the Sherrill Hudson Court at Kates Gymnasium in less than 24 hours, Ashland University's volleyball team earned a second straight Great Midwest home sweep in less than 24 hours, topping Kentucky Wesleyan, 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-18) on Saturday (Sept. 10) afternoon.

The Eagles move above the .500 mark at 6-5 overall and 2-0 in the conference after a third consecutive victory, while the Panthers are 2-8, 0-2.

Ashland improves to 14-0 all-time against Kentucky Wesleyan.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • For the third consecutive match, the Eagles were strong at the net, recording 18 block assists against the Panthers. Ashland has three solo blocks and 50 blocks assists in its last three matches – all Eagle victories.
  • "That was our emphasis after the Indy trip," noted Ashland head coach Kevin Foeman, "was to get our blocking back to where it should be. We went really hard, watched a lot of extra film, got a lot of extra reps to get back our blocking...and it showed this weekend what we can do."
  • Senior middle blocker Anna Krikke led the block brigade with five assists. Fifth-year senior setter Zoey Peck had 17 assists in two sets, and both junior libero Katie Thompson (17) and sophomore outside hitter Makenna Belcher (13) each recorded double-digit digs.

UP NEXT
Ashland will play its first road Great Midwest match of 2022 on Tuesday (Sept. 13) at 7 p.m. at Ohio Dominican (4-7, 1-1).

"The concern will be making sure they take of their bodies tomorrow, then we have a good, crisp practice on Monday," Foeman said. "The biggest thing is turning around and watching film and scouting."
