Brockington Joins Eagle Women’s Basketball Team As Transfer

Ashland University head women's basketball coach Kari Pickens has announced the transfer of former Purdue Northwest guard Savaya Brockington for the 2022-23 season.

Brockington, who will be a senior in 2022-23 with two seasons of eligibility remaining, was a second-team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference choice as a sophomore in 2020-21, averaging 15.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.2 steals in 30.2 minutes per game, while hitting 83.3 percent from the free-throw line.

As a junior in 2021-22, Brockington was a limited to nine games, going for 13.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.2 steals in 28.6 minutes per game.

She enters the 2022-23 campaign with 806 career collegiate points.

"I am thrilled to welcome Savaya to our women's basketball program," Pickens said. "She is a dynamic combo guard who will be able to impact the court on both ends. Having had an outstanding college career so far, Savaya is going to bring great experience to our program."

Brockington's addition brings the 2022-23 newcomer count to six – sophomore forward Zoe Miller and redshirt senior guard/forward Molly Dever from NCAA Division I Bowling Green, fifth-year point guard Maddie Maloney from Saginaw Valley State, and Massillon Perry guard Meredith Randulic and Shelby guard Sophia Niese, both incoming freshmen.

The Eagles concluded the 2021-22 season at 29-3 overall and 21-1 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, having won both the Great Midwest regular-season and tournament championships. Ashland also played host to the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional, finished the season ranked No. 9 in the country, and was ranked as high as No. 2 during the campaign.

Over the last 11 seasons, Ashland has gone 322-39 (.892) with two NCAA Division II national championships, two national runner-up finishes, two undefeated seasons, a D-II-record 73-game winning streak, six 30-win seasons, 10 NCAA postseason qualifications, seven conference regular-season championships, eight conference tournament titles, and a mark of 175-13 (.931) at the Sherrill Hudson Court at Kates Gymnasium.
