Eagles Sweep Storm At Home For Second Straight Day

Ashland University's baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Lake Erie with two wins on Sunday (April 3), 9-0 and 13-5, at Tomassi Stadium and Donges Field at the Archer Ballpark Complex.

The Eagles, winners of six of their last seven games, improve to 15-9 overall and 8-4 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, while the Storm are 3-19, 1-11.

"Good weekend any time you can win four," said Ashland head coach John Schaly. "A lot of good things. I think three guys had their first college hit. It was a good weekend."

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles wasted no time getting on the board in the opener, scoring six runs, with the big blows coming on a two-run double from senior center fielder Sebastian Fabik and a two-run home run from senior right fielder Dillan Smith.
  • Ashland added a single run in the bottom of the third and two in the bottom of the fourth to open up a 9-0 advantage – and the final margin of victory.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Jacob Harsany (3-1) tied a season high by striking out 10 in five innings to earn the victory. He allowed two hits and a walk.
  • "He threw really well. Pretty much all our pitchers threw well," Schaly said.
  • Fabik and Smith each drove in three runs, senior designated hitter Tim Zeller was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, and senior shortstop Austin Eifrid, freshman second baseman Ian Sanders and Smith each had two hits.
  • Game 2 started in a similar fashion, with the Eagles scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first. Six different AU players had an RBI, and the seventh run came in on a wild pitch.
  • After the Storm scored a run in the top of the fourth, Ashland responded with a five-spot in the bottom of the frame for a 12-1 lead, and the Eagles went on to victory from there.
  • Junior righty Josh Meyer (2-2) went the first five innings and earned the victory, allowing four hits, one run (unearned) and one walk and striking out three.
  • Eifrid, Fabik, senior catcher/left fielder Seth Schroeder and freshman first baseman Joey Bertani each had two of AU's 15 hits in the nightcap, and freshman left fielder Cam Miller, Fabik and Schroeder each drove in two runs.
  • In the four-game series, Zeller finished 8-for-10 with nine RBIs.
  • "After two splits, it was important to come back and make a statement. Winning four in a row isn't easy," Zeller said. "Fifth year, you always have to capitalize on what you're given. I have high expectations of this team and myself. I'm happy with how it's been going so far."
  • Said Schaly, "He swung it well this weekend. He has all year. He's a good hitter. Uses the whole field, hits with power."

UP NEXT
Ashland will go to Malone (11-15, 3-7) for a four-game Great Midwest series on Saturday and Sunday (April 9-10).
