Despite a 7-0 lead after the first 15 minutes on Sunday (April 24) at Ferguson Field, Ashland University's women's lacrosse team lost to Findlay, 13-11, in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference matchup.
The Eagles are 6-9 overall and 5-4 in the Great Midwest, and the Oilers are 8-6, 7-1.
WHAT HAPPENED
- The Eagles began the game on fire, running out to the 7-0 lead through the first quarter. The Oilers scored the first four goals of the second period before junior midfielder Madie Gash's tally with 13 seconds left prior to the break made it an 8-4 contest.
- Findlay got to within 8-6 early in the third quarter before Ashland countered with three consecutive goals to begin to pull away again. Trailing 11-6, however, the Oilers rallied once again, scoring the last four goals of the third for an 11-10 contest heading into the final quarter.
- Another Findlay tally with 10:44 left in regulation tied the game at 11-all, and another with 8:55 remaining put the Oilers up for the first time on the day at 12-11 – and UF went on to win from there.
- Junior midfielder Cassady Becker continued her recent scoring prowess, posting five goals and an assist on Sunday. In seven games in April, Becker has 28 goals and 11 assists for 39 points.
- Another junior midfielder, Natalie Sonntag, had a hat trick, Gash had a goal and two assists, and junior attacker Emily Jewell dished out three assists.
- Sophomore goalie Jillian Rekulak made nine saves.
UP NEXT
Ashland will conclude the regular season at home on Sunday (May 1) at noon against Walsh.
