Baseball Earns Non-League Road Split Against Mercyhurst

On Wednesday (April 20), Ashland University's baseball team briefly went out of Great Midwest Athletic Conference play, splitting a doubleheader at Mercyhurst.

Thanks to the 8-1 loss in Game 1 and a 6-4 victory in Game 2, the Eagles are 23-12 overall, and the Lakers are 23-9. The twinbill featured two winning teams of late – Ashland now 14-4 in the last 18 games, Mercyhurst now 10-3 in the last 13 outings.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The second-game win was powered by senior first baseman Micah Allen, who was 3-for-3 with two home runs, four RBIs and three runs scored. Allen has a team-high nine home runs in just 80 at-bats so far in 2022.
  • Senior right-hander Joel Ciccarelli (4-0) earned his fourth relief victory of the season after striking out four in 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Another senior righty, Perry Bewley, recorded save No. 5 of the season thanks to two scoreless frames and five strikeouts.
  • In Game 1, the Lakers jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two innings and didn't look back.
  • Sophomore righty Justin Dyksma (4-2) allowed four hits, five runs and four walks and struck out three in two innings, taking the mound loss.

UP NEXT
Ashland (14-6 Great Midwest), in second place in the conference standings, will return to league play on Saturday and Sunday (April 23-24) at Ohio Dominican (13-23, 6-14).
