On a day of looking back at the first 100 years of play and looking ahead to playing on a refurbished field, Ashland University's baseball team took two games from Lake Erie on Saturday (April 2), 16-5 and 6-2, at Tomassi Stadium and Donges Field at the Archer Ballpark Complex.
Â
The Eagles improve to 13-9 overall and 6-4 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, while the Storm is 3-17, 1-9.
Â
"The first game, we played well. We actually swung it pretty well (in the second game)," said Ashland head coach
John Schaly. "We hit some balls right at them, they caught it.
Â
"We are so appreciative of the support that we've gotten from our alums and parents and friends. I'm so thankful. Then to get two wins on a day like this makes it really great."

WHAT HAPPENED
- Ashland took the early lead in Saturday's opener, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning on RBIs from senior second baseman Tim Zeller (single) and freshman designated hitter Ian Sanders (fielder's choice). The Eagles extended that early advantage to 4-0 in the second when senior right fielder Dillan Smith scored on a Storm error, and Zeller added another run-scoring single.
- Sanders started the third inning with a solo home run to left-center field for a 5-0 AU lead – the start of an eight-run inning to put the Eagles ahead by a 12-0 count. Lake Erie got on the board with a three-spot in the top of the fourth, AU countered with a run in the bottom of the frame, then the Storm added two in the top of the fifth for a 13-5 AU count.
- Ashland scored three more in the bottom of the fifth, and the game was called after 6½ innings at 16-5.
- Zeller was 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and four RBIs; Sanders was 1-for-3 with the homer, a run scored and three RBIs; Smith, freshman center fielder Cal Johnston and sophomore third baseman Devin Hukill each drove in two runs; and Hukill, senior outfielder Sebastian Fabik and senior shortstop Austin Eifrid each had two hits.
- Senior right-hander Josh Stover (1-2) won following five innings of striking out eight and allowing four hits, five runs (four earned) and two walks.
- In the nightcap, the Storm scored twice in the top of the first, but the Eagles countered with a run in the bottom of the frame on a Zeller sacrifice fly.
- Back-to-back homers from Fabik and Smith put the Eagles up 3-2 in the bottom of the third, then Hukill's RBI double and Zeller's sac fly in the fourth made it a 5-2 AU lead.
- Zeller added an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth for the final mark of victory, helping sophomore right-hander Justin Dyksma (3-1), who authored a complete-game one-hitter. Dyksma whiffed eight and allowed two runs (one earned) and two walks.
- "Dyksma threw a great game," Schaly said.
- With three more RBIs in Game 2, Zeller drove in seven runs on the day.
