AU Women Turn Tables On No. 13 Yellow Jackets To Win Second Straight Great Midwest Tourney Title

The only loss Ashland University's women's soccer team took since the first two games of the 2022 season was a 2-1 decision at Cedarville on Sept. 17.

Looking to go 2-for-2 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference Tournament championships, and do so against the No. 13-ranked Yellow Jackets both times, the Eagles accomplished the feat on Saturday (Nov. 5) night at Cedarville, 1-0.

"We talked about that at the end of the game," Ashland head coach Cayleb Paulino said of winning on his team winning this year on Cedarville's home field. "We learned a lesson the first time we played them at their place. You could really tell the experience we've gained with this young group."

Ashland, receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll, will automatically qualify for the NCAA Division II postseason at 15-3-2 overall, 15-1-2 in the last 18 games, and 10-0-2 in the last 12 outings since that early-season defeat a little more than two hours from campus.

The Yellow Jackets are 16-3-1, and saw their 13-game winning streak snapped.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The only goal Ashland needed on Saturday night came from sophomore midfielder Merrik Mihalek in the 14th minute, as her high shot to the top of the box provided the final margin of victory. It was Mihalek's first goal of 2022, it was unassisted, and it was her first goal since Oct. 30, 2021.
  • "She dealt with some injuries at the beginning of conference season," Paulino said. "Upper 90 goal."

THE WRAP-UP
  • Senior goalkeeper Bri Rogers collected yet another clean sheet, her third in a row, 11th of the season and 19th as an Eagle. Rogers made seven saves in Saturday's victory.
  • Cedarville outshot Ashland by a 13-4 count, including 11-1 in the second half. Ashland had a slight 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
  • "We had the wind in the first half," said Paulino. "It was difficult for Cedarville in the first half, and it was really tough for us in the second half."
  • Rogers was voted the tournament's Most Valuable Player. AU members of the all-tournament team were forwards Bailey Clark (senior), McKinley Mendenhall (sophomore) and Dani Hicks (freshman), and fifth-year center back Rylie Howman.
