Eagle Women Lose To Bulldogs In Ninth Shootout Round In NCAA Opener

The fourth consecutive NCAA Division II postseason appearance for Ashland University's women's soccer team ended in heartbreaking fashion on Thursday (Nov. 10) night in Cedarville, as the No. 3-seed Eagles tied No. 6-seed Ferris State, 1-1, but lost in the ninth shootout round of the Midwest split regional semifinal.

Ashland's season ends at 15-3-3, while the Bulldogs move on at 10-5-6.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Ashland broke through in the 38th minute when freshman midfielder Leiah Goedde collected her own rebound and scored left to the top right corner of the Bulldog net. Goedde's fifth goal of her rookie season put AU on top, 1-0.
  • In the 48th minute, however, Ferris State's Nikki May scored to knot the game at 1. Through 90 minutes, each team had one goal, six shots and three corner kicks.
  • After neither team scored in the two 10-minute overtime periods, it was on to a shootout. A best-of-five turned out to be a best-of-nine, and Ferris State won when Isabella Sabo's shot went into the back of the Eagle net.

THE WRAP-UP
  • Senior goalkeeper Bri Rogers made one save prior to the shootout stage.
  • Shots were scarce on both sides on Thursday, as Ferris State had a slim 8-7 advantage through 110 minutes. Ashland had five corner kicks to the Bulldogs' three.
