No. 6 AU Football Routs, Shuts Out Cavaliers On The Road

Ashland Starts A Season 5-0 For The First Time Since 2015

On Saturday (Oct. 8) afternoon at Walsh, the No. 6-ranked Ashland University football team scored early and often on the Cavaliers, finishing the day with a 35-0 win.

The Eagles move to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference after finishing the first half of the regular season, while the Cavaliers are 0-6, 0-4.

Saturday's shutout was Ashland's first since the 2021 season-ender at Kentucky Wesleyan (17-0).

Ashland already has matched its win total in all of the 2021 season, and continues to stay tied in the loss column atop the Great Midwest standings. The Eagles' average margin of victory so far this fall is 27.2 points.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • After senior linebacker Michael Ayers recovered a Cavalier fumble on the first play from scrimmage, sophomore fullback Johron Johnson fell on an Eagle fumble in the end zone two plays later to give AU a 7-0 lead just 58 seconds into the game.
  • Shortly thereafter, the first career interception for senior defensive tackle Nick Cone was turned into the Eagles' second touchdown in the first 1:37 of the contest – a five-yard pass from senior quarterback Austin Brenner to junior wide receiver Jake McLoughlin.
  • Ashland's third score of the opening quarter came at the 4:32 mark, as junior tailback Larry Martin went in for a TD run from two yards out. The Eagles made it a 28-0 lead with a fourth first-quarter TD when, less than a minute later, redshirt freshman cornerback Logan Hehman fell on a blocked punt in the end zone.
  • The game's scoring ended in the second quarter when Ashland cashed in again, this time on a fumble recovery touchdown from sophomore defensive end Chris Julian in the end zone with 1:03 to go until halftime.

THE WRAP-UP
  • The Eagles are 5-0 to start a season for the first time in seven years.
  • Ashland has won all eight meetings with Walsh on the gridiron all-time.
