Scoring a season-high number of goals on Thursday (Oct. 13) at Ferguson Field, Ashland University's men's soccer team earned a 6-3 Great Midwest Athletic Conference victory over Malone.
The Eagles improve to 8-4-1 overall and 7-3 in the Great Midwest after their seventh win in the last outings, and remain tied atop the conference table with Tiffin. The Pioneers are 3-11, 1-9.
Ashland has won six in a row in the series with Malone, and earned a second win over the Pioneers in as many weeks.
WHAT HAPPENED
- In the 16th minute, a Pioneer yellow card in the box resulted in a penalty kick goal from senior forward Haruki Kimura. Kimura's fourth goal of 2022, and his third PK tally, but the Eagles ahead early.
- It didn't take long for the Eagles to pick up their second goal of the contest, as, in the 21st minute, senior forward Floris Kluemper put in his third goal of the year off a rebound following a corner kick from junior midfielder Vander Rocha. It was Rocha's team-leading fourth helper of the fall.
- Malone cut its deficit in half in the 29th minute when Christian Piccolotto scored on a cross from Randy Harris.
- Ashland, however, came back with two more goals to close the first half. Sophomore midfielder Oliver Lovell's unassisted goal in the 35th minute, his first of the season, put the Eagle lead back to two goals. Then, in the 43rd minute, Rocha scored on a feed from sophomore midfielder Sam Jordan – Rocha's fourth goal of the season, and Jordan's second assist.
- Trailing 4-1 at the break, the Pioneers made it a 4-2 game in the 49th minute on a goal from Anthony Birus. Ashland, however, once again had the answer in the form of a second Rocha goal in the 55th minute from Lovell, then a PK goal in the 69th minute by junior midfielder Matthew Roberts. Rocha has five goals this season, all against Malone; Lovell earned his first assist, and Roberts' goal was his third as an Eagle.
- Malone finished the nine-goal contest in the 79th minute when Colton Fry potted one from Birus.
THE WRAP-UP
- Sophomore goalkeeper Ty Bowden stopped three shots in the victory.
- Thursday's game featured a combined 32 shots, 17 corner kicks and 33 fouls.
