Eagle Men Stay In First In Great Midwest After Home Win Over T’Wolves

On Saturday (Oct. 15) at Ferguson Field against Northwood, Ashland University's men's soccer team rallied from a first-half own goal and scored four consecutive goals en route to a 4-1 Great Midwest Athletic Conference victory.

The Eagles move to 9-4-1 overall and 8-3 in the conference, staying in a first-place tie with Tiffin, and having gone 8-1 in their last nine outings after a 1-3-1 start. The Timberwolves are 6-4-4, 5-4-1.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • With seven minutes left in the first half, Northwood took a 1-0 lead on an AU own goal. Then, with 50 seconds left until the break, senior forward Haruki Kimura countered with a penalty kick goal for his fifth tally of the fall and fourth on a PK.
  • Ashland wasted little time in taking a 2-1 lead in the second half, as, in the 47th minute, sophomore midfielder Teddy Togliatti's first goal of the fall in front of the Timberwolves net gave the Eagles the lead. Assists went to senior forward Floris Kluemper (second of the season) and senior midfielder Oliver Whaley (third of 2022).
  • The Eagle advantage moved to 3-1 in the 67th minute when Whaley fired his first goal as an Ashland performer, on a pass from sophomore forward Jake Grove for his second assist of 2022.
  • Kimura made it a 4-1 contest in the 81st minute, scoring 1-on-1 with the Northwood goalkeeper after Grove fed him the ball. Kimura's sixth goal of the season came from Grove's third helper.

THE WRAP-UP
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Ty Bowden (9-4-1) made one save to pick up the victory on Saturday afternoon.
  • Ashland had a 19-7 shots advantage in the victory, and Northwood led in corner kicks, 8-5.
